Georgian Townhouse Full Restoration

The Challenge

The principal challenge was working within the constraints of a listed building, where every surface treatment needed to respect the historical fabric of the property. Several rooms featured original cornicing and ceiling roses that had been obscured by decades of paint build-up, requiring painstaking removal and restoration before any new coatings could be applied.

Our Approach

We began with a thorough survey alongside the client's conservation architect to establish which elements were original and which had been added later. All original plasterwork was carefully stripped back using steam and gentle chemical methods to avoid damage. Timber joinery was prepared by hand, with each layer of historic paint removed to reveal the crisp moulding profiles beneath. We then applied a traditional system of primer, undercoat, and two full finishing coats throughout.

The Result

The finished townhouse is a showcase of restrained Georgian elegance, with each room flowing harmoniously into the next. The client was particularly delighted with the drawing room, where the restored ceiling rose and cornice detailing now form the centrepiece of the space.
