Nash Terrace Exterior Restoration

A Grade I listed John Nash terrace property overlooking Regent's Park required a meticulous exterior restoration, including repair and repainting of the iconic stucco facade, all sash windows, the Ionic portico columns, and the front door. The work was carried out under the supervision of the Crown Estate's conservation team.

The Challenge

As a Grade I listed building under Crown Estate stewardship, every aspect of the work was subject to the most rigorous approvals process. The stucco had to be repaired using traditional lime render matching the original Nash specification. Paint colours and types required written approval from the Crown Estate surveyor. The Ionic columns featured delicate fluting that needed careful preparation to avoid softening their crisp profiles.

Our Approach

We submitted a comprehensive method statement and materials schedule to the Crown Estate for approval before any work commenced. The stucco facade was scaffolded using a system that left zero fixings in the historic render. Damaged stucco was cut out and repaired by a specialist lime plasterer using a matched lime-putty render. The entire facade was then painted with a breathable mineral masonry paint in the Crown Estate's approved cream. Each Ionic column was individually prepared, with the fluting cleaned using small brushes and the capitals detailed by hand. Sash windows were stripped, repaired, and repainted in the traditional white. The front door received the full five-coat gloss treatment in the approved black.

The Result

The completed restoration has returned the property to its original Regency splendour, with crisp stucco, gleaming windows, and a mirror-finish front door. The Crown Estate surveyor commended the work as one of the finest recent restorations on the terrace, and the property now sits proudly within the Nash ensemble.
