Doors are among the most touched and scrutinised surfaces in any home. They need to look impeccable from both sides, open and close smoothly, and withstand daily handling without chipping or scuffing. Our door painting and spraying service delivers factory-quality finishes on every style of door, from six-panel Georgian originals to sleek modern flush designs. We offer both on-site hand painting and off-site spraying for the smoothest possible result.
About Our Doors Service
A well-painted door makes a quiet but powerful statement about the quality of decoration throughout a home. Stand in the hallway of a beautifully maintained Mayfair townhouse and the doors immediately command attention: panels sit flat and even, rails and stiles show uniform sheen, edges are crisp, and the finish is free of brush marks, drips, and sags. Achieving this standard consistently across every door in a property requires discipline in preparation and skill in application. Interior doors accumulate fingerprints, scuffs from shoes and bags, and sticky residue from tape and adhesive labels. The areas around handles and kick plates see the heaviest wear. Without proper preparation, new paint will simply sit on top of this contamination and fail. Our door painters understand the anatomy of both panelled and flush doors, the direction in which paint should be applied for the best flow, and the importance of maintaining a wet edge across the entire surface to prevent lap marks. For the ultimate finish, we remove doors from their frames, transport them to our spray facility, and return them with a coating that rivals factory originals.

Our Approach
We offer two approaches to door painting. The first is traditional on-site hand painting, where doors are prepared in place, hardware is masked or removed, and paint is applied with brushes using the correct sequence for each door type. Panelled doors are painted panels first, then rails, then stiles, maintaining a wet edge throughout. This approach suits clients who need doors to remain functional during the project. The second approach is off-site spraying. Doors are removed from their frames, transported to our spray workshop, and coated using an HVLP spray system in a temperature-controlled booth. This process eliminates brush marks entirely and produces a finish indistinguishable from factory-applied lacquer. Doors are returned to site and rehung once the coating has fully cured. We adjust hinges and latches to compensate for the added paint thickness, ensuring smooth operation. In both cases, preparation is thorough: old paint in poor condition is stripped, bare wood is primed, and every surface is sanded between coats for optimal adhesion and smoothness.
Materials & Brands
For hand-painted doors, we use Little Greene Intelligent Eggshell or Farrow & Ball Modern Eggshell, both of which level well and produce a smooth, elegant finish. For spray-applied doors, we prefer Benjamin Moore Advance for its outstanding self-levelling properties, or Renner two-pack polyurethane for maximum durability in high-traffic areas. Primers include Zinsser BIN for sealing knots and stains, and Dulux Trade Quick Dry Wood Primer for bare timber. All products are low-VOC and safe for use in occupied homes.
Property Considerations
Georgian and Victorian townhouses typically have substantial panelled doors with multiple moulding profiles that require careful brushwork. Some properties retain original doors with centuries of paint history, and these may benefit from professional stripping to restore lost detail before repainting. Modern apartments often feature flush doors that show every surface imperfection, making spray application the preferred technique. Fire-rated doors must retain their FD rating, so we are careful not to remove intumescent strips or alter the door's dimensions during preparation.

For spray finishing we remove doors to trestles for optimal results. For brush-painted eggshell finishes, we can paint doors hung in their frames with careful masking of surrounding areas. We discuss the best approach for each project.
We apply a minimum of two coats of premium eggshell over a suitable primer. Previously painted doors in good condition receive a light sand, spot-prime, and two topcoats. Bare timber doors receive a full primer coat plus two topcoats.
Farrow & Ball Modern Eggshell, Little Greene Intelligent Eggshell, or Benjamin Moore Advance. These products combine excellent durability with a beautiful, levelling finish that enhances the moulding profiles of panelled doors.
Yes. We paint fire doors using intumescent-compatible coatings that do not compromise the door's fire rating. No material is removed from the door edges, and the existing intumescent strip and seals are left undisturbed.
We paint panels in the correct sequence — mouldings first, then the panel field, then rails and stiles — using appropriately loaded brushes. This systematic method and constant attention to detail prevents paint pooling in corners and recesses.
A single internal door takes approximately two hours per coat when painted by brush, or around 30 minutes per coat when spray finished. Allow a full day per door for complete preparation, priming, two topcoats and rehinging.
