Garden fences, gates, trellises, pergolas, and outbuildings deserve the same quality of finish as the rest of your property. Our fence and garden painting service covers everything from simple fence panel staining to the full decoration of garden rooms, summer houses, and ornamental ironwork. We use exterior-grade coatings that withstand constant exposure to moisture, UV light, and temperature extremes, keeping your garden looking polished year-round.

About Our Fences & Garden Service

London garden spaces, however compact, are increasingly valued as extensions of the home. In the private gardens behind Mayfair townhouses, the mews courtyards of Belgravia, and the communal gardens of Kensington mansion blocks, the condition of boundary fences, gates, and garden structures contributes significantly to the overall impression of care and quality. A beautifully maintained interior loses its impact if visible from a kitchen or conservatory window is a garden bounded by weathered, flaking fence panels and rusting ironwork. Our garden painting service brings the same professional standards to outdoor structures that we apply to the finest interiors. We understand that garden surfaces face the harshest conditions of any painted element: twelve months of weather exposure, ground contact moisture, fungal growth, and insect attack. The coatings we specify are formulated to resist all of these threats while maintaining an attractive appearance. Whether you want a classic dark fence stain that recedes into the planting, a bold painted finish that creates a feature of your boundary, or a carefully maintained set of garden ironwork, we deliver results that elevate your outdoor space.

Our Approach

Garden painting begins with thorough surface assessment. Timber structures are checked for rot, loose fixings, and previous coating failure. Ironwork is inspected for rust, loose rivets, and structural soundness. We pressure wash all surfaces to remove algae, moss, dirt, and loose material, then allow adequate drying time before applying any coatings. Timber that has weathered to grey is sanded to reveal fresh wood that accepts stain or paint evenly. Rotten sections are replaced with pressure-treated timber to prevent the problem recurring. For fences and garden structures, we typically recommend exterior wood stains rather than film-forming paints, as stains penetrate the timber and do not peel or flake when they eventually weather. However, for a more refined look on gates and bespoke garden buildings, we use exterior paints in the same systems we apply to house exteriors. Ironwork receives wire brushing or sanding to remove loose rust, followed by a zinc-rich or red oxide primer and two coats of exterior gloss or metallic finish.

Materials & Brands

For timber fences and structures, we use Cuprinol Garden Shades for colour staining, Sadolin Classic for semi-transparent protection, and Osmo Country Colour for an opaque, long-lasting painted finish. Timber preservatives from Barrettine and Ronseal provide base protection where needed. Ironwork is primed with Hammerite Rust Beater and finished with Hammerite Direct to Rust or traditional exterior gloss. For premium garden buildings, we apply the same Little Greene and Farrow & Ball exterior coatings used on main property exteriors.

Property Considerations

In conservation areas, the appearance of boundary treatments visible from the street may be subject to planning control. We can advise on appropriate colours and finishes that comply with local requirements. Shared boundaries require agreement with neighbouring property owners, and we can facilitate this communication. Properties with rear access via mews lanes may need careful scheduling to avoid blocking access during work. Garden painting is weather-dependent, and we schedule this work during dry periods, typically between April and October, though mild winter spells in London can also provide suitable conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

For softwood fences we recommend a high-quality fence stain or preservative such as Cuprinol or Ronseal that penetrates the timber and protects against rot, UV damage and fungal growth. Opaque fence paint is available for a solid colour finish.

Stains and preservatives should be reapplied every two to three years. Opaque fence paint lasts three to five years before it needs refreshing. Regular maintenance significantly extends the life of the timber.

Yes. We wire-brush away algae and loose material, sand rough areas, and treat any fungal growth with a biocidal wash. Plants and borders adjacent to the fence are covered with protective sheeting before any product is applied.

Spray application is ideal for fences and can cut application time by more than half. We mask adjacent surfaces and protect plants thoroughly before spraying, and back-brush the product into the timber grain for maximum penetration.

The full spectrum is available — from traditional golden-brown and cedar tones to contemporary shades like slate grey, sage green, charcoal and navy. Dark colours absorb more heat and can accelerate drying of the timber, which we take into account.

It is courteous to notify neighbours, especially if the fence sits on the boundary. We take care to apply product only to your side unless you have agreed otherwise. Any overspray is prevented by shielding the far side with drop sheets.
