Case Study

Riverside Villa Interior Repaint

A substantial Victorian villa overlooking the Thames at Richmond was redecorated throughout its ground and first floors, comprising eight principal rooms, a large kitchen-diner, and all associated hallways and landings. The client wanted to embrace the abundant natural light reflected off the river.

The Challenge

The river-facing rooms receive intense reflected light that can make conventional whites appear stark and cold. Conversely, the rooms at the rear of the house receive significantly less light, creating a noticeable contrast as one moves through the property. Creating a cohesive palette that worked across these very different lighting conditions was essential.

Our Approach

We conducted colour consultations in both the morning and afternoon to observe how light moved through the house at different times. For the river-facing rooms, we selected warm-toned pale colours that would be enhanced rather than bleached by the bright reflected light. Rear rooms received slightly more saturated versions of complementary colours to compensate for lower light levels. The open-plan kitchen-diner was treated as a transitional space, with a mid-tone that bridged the front and rear palettes. All surfaces received thorough preparation including filling, sanding, and a complete coat system.

The Result

The finished villa feels unified and harmonious despite the dramatically different light conditions from room to room. The client particularly appreciates how the river-facing sitting room glows warmly in the afternoon sun, exactly as intended.

The way the painters considered the light from the river when choosing colours shows a level of expertise we simply did not expect. Every room feels right, regardless of the time of day or the weather outside.
